Perineal Massage
Perineal massage is a technique that can be used during pregnancy to help stretch and soften the perineum, which is the area of skin and muscle between the vagina and anus. This can help to reduce the risk of tearing during childbirth.
Perineal massage is usually started around 34 weeks of pregnancy and done for 5-10 minutes, 3-4 times a week. To do a perineal massage, insert two fingers into your vagina and press down towards your anus, stretching the perineum. You can also massage the outside of your perineum by gently pressing and stretching the skin.
Perineal massage can be done by yourself or with your partner. It is important to wash your hands thoroughly before and after massaging. You can also use a lubricant such as olive oil or coconut oil to make the massage more comfortable.
Some women find perineal massage to be uncomfortable at first, but it usually becomes more comfortable with practice. If you feel any pain, stop massaging and talk to your doctor or midwife.
